Macquarie Bank | King St Wharf

Engineered access solution for architectural sensation!

As work winds up at the new Macquarie Bank headquarters (Darling Harbour, NSW), final testing on the access program for the buildings facade is being undertaken by KA. Both unique and complex, the buildings 'Digi Grid' steel design held many challenges when engineering a total access solution both inside and out.

Macquarie Bank

Working closely with the developers Multiplex - KA supplied a Davit Arm system that will allow maintenance crews abseil access to the structure's exterior and to work between the grid and building walls. Internally, a soaring atrium features glass pods that cantilever from the facade into the open spaces above housing meeting and break out spaces. The design is stunning, requiring a sophisticated network of monorails, installed above and below the pods to allow for full rope access. This fully engineered solution was necessary to ensure safe and simple access for cleaning and repair crews, enabling them to work safely above without impeding any foot traffic areas below.

Manntech HQ visit in Germany

KAs Tim Goodwin with Manntech Engineer Alexander Griel in Munich

Manntech 2008 was an opportunity for international distributors to meet each other and discuss the current trends and product enhancements with the Manntech design and engineering teams.

Manntech's continuing practice of highest quality design and product development ensures all BMUs supplied by them, custom fit the job they are intended for. Conference delegates spent time on the shop floor with the engineers and consulting with design team in house. An added bonus - the meeting coincided with local celebration - 'Oktoberfest' and conference delegates were treated to a night out sampling the local beers!

Good Design and easy access at Matraville

Technical problem solving produces engineered design for roof access challenge!

Proximity to salt water, structural placement, available proprietary access systems and retro fitting were just a few of the challenges facing the KA installed systems team when they designed an engineered solution for the Military Rd Business Park in Matraville. Home to the new IKEA distribution depot, not only will the warehouses store the latest in clever furnishing design - their roof access has taken a leaf out of IKEAs book with clever and appropriate design!

Our client PM Group specified light weight, corrosion resistant, minimum impact external access. Juralco Guardsafe aluminium stair system was the right choice. The Juralco range boasts clever features and flexibility - allowing it to be easily integrated into the specifically designed, stand alone structure fabricated by the KA in house design team.

ARAA Releases industry report on Gold Coast
Rope Access incident

Check, Check and Re-check!

The ARAA has released a summary report about a near miss accident on a routine building clean at the Gold Coast. KA rope access trainer, Liam Francomb, commented on the report findings... "it appears, the crew failed to undertake the basic checks and rechecks" he said... "at the end of the day, it's your life on the line, don't trust someone else with it!

Risk of accidents is minimised when operators function in an environment where safety is paramount

Operators cannot afford to get complacent or to rely on others to complete equipment checks on their behalf". Rope Access Techniques can only be a successful form of building maintenance when crews remain diligent, and keep their skills current. "Risk of accidents is minimised when operators function in an environment where safety is paramount" said Francomb.

It's that time of year again... Movember!

Movember

Many of the KA crew are keen to support Movember once again... Support your hairy friends; donate wildly and often! Spare a thought for Di our Marketing Gal, who has to put up with all these would be 'pornstars' hanging around the office. They love it, she spends the month cringing... So, make it count!

Donate online or send a cheque to 'Movember Foundation' ref 1364266, PO Box 292, Prahran VIC 3181.

Movember raises awareness of men's health issues and donates to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyond blue - the national depression initiative.

Did you know: Depression affects 1 in 6 men... most don't seek help. Untreated depression is a leading risk factor for suicide. Last year in Australia 18,700 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 2,900 died of prostate cancer - equivalent to the number of women who will die from breast cancer annually.
